2012 NPM National Convention

Office of Sacred Music - New Roman Missal Update
August 4, 2011
Dear Pastors, Music Directors, and Liturgists,
The Third Edition of the Roman Missal will take effect on the weekend of November 26-‐27, the First Sunday of Advent. To ease the transition to the revised texts, Archbishop Henry Mansell, following the recommendation of the United States (USCCB) Committee on Divine Worship, has authorized the gradual introduction of the revised texts in musical settings
beginning October 1, 2011. This permission applies only to the Glory to God, the Holy, Holy, Holy, and acclamations at the Mystery of Faith (Memorial Acclamations), which are contained in most musical settings. Note that this gradual introduction only applies to the texts when used in a musical context, not spoken. New musical settings of the Amen and the Lamb of God, the texts of which are not changing, can be introduced at any time. Preliminarily, it is strongly recommended that you carefully read the first two International Commission on English in the Liturgy) MUSIC FOR THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ROMAN MISSAL: AN INTRODUCTION.
http://icelweb.org/ICELMusicIntroductionRev809.pdf
Chant and the Revised Roman Missal
ICEL strongly recommends the use of the new chant settings included in the Missal preserve and recover the tradition of unaccompanied singing in the Roman Rite in keeping with the Vatican II document, Sacrosanctum Concilium, which encourages raising the liturgy celebrating in song (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 1963, 113). While these chants are beautifully sung unaccompanied as they appear in the Missal, the USCCB reports that accompaniments will be available in the very near future.
In addition to these new chant settings, the Music Advisory Committee of the Archdiocese of Hartford reminds you that Latin chant remains an appropriate part of the parish repertoire in accordance with the USCCB's Sing To The Lord: Music In Divine Worship, 75, November 14, 2007.

New and Revised Musical Settings
When considering musical settings other than chant, the Committee recommends choosing newly composed settings, though revised musical settings are another option. Please note that, although some revised settings may seem to support the new translation well, they may also lead to confusion with the old texts and may delay the learning of the revised texts.
The following is a list of suggested new and revised musical settings prepared by The Department of Music and the Music Advisory Committee of the Archdiocese of Hartford.

Worship Sheets
To aid congregations in learning any of these music settings, you may want to consider using a Worship Sheet containing the music notation. The Music Department of the Cathedral of Saint Joseph has created several Worship Sheet templates for you to download and use.
The downloadable Worship Sheets will be available at:
http://www.cathedralofsaintjoseph.com/newmissal
You are welcome to customize these templates for use in your parish, but before printing any music, you must first obtain a license from the publisher. There are licensing providers which allow you to purchase a single license to publish music from an extensive list of member publishers. Two such providers are OneLicense.net (http://www.onelicense.net) and LicenSing Online (https://www.licensingonline.org/en-‐us) . Visit their websites to view the lists of member publishers and further details on how these licenses are used.
Note: The chant settings included in the revised Missal may be used without permission.
Hymnals
Parishes that use hymnals should contact their publishers to request supplemental materials containing revised texts for these publications. These supplements usually include assembly parts for a selection of new and revised Masses, as well as the revised Order of Mass chants from the Roman Missal.
For example, parishes using GIA hymnals (e.g., Worship III, Ritual Song, Gather) purchased after November 1, 2004 are entitled to hymnal supplements through GIA at no charge. For more information, see http://www.giamusic.com/search_details.cfm?title_id=19289.
Alternatively, you may purchase the assembly edition for individual Mass settings
http://www.giamusic.com/sacred_music/assembly_editions.cfm.
OCP hymnals that will be affected include Glory & Praise, Second Edition; Journeysongs, Second Edition; and One Faith, Una Voz. If you purchased these hymnals after September 2006, OCP will provide free copies of their hymnal supplement. Parishes using these or other OCP publications Missal and Hymnal Customer Support page at http://www.ocp.org/newmasssettings/missalandhymnalsupport. You may also find free downloadable assembly editions of new and revised Masses from OCP at http://www.ocp.org/newmasssettings.

Dr. Ezequiel Menendez, chair
Dear Music Ministers,
Beginning Advent 2011, Mass will be celebrated using The Third Edition of the Roman Missal. To prepare for the changes in the new Missal, Dr. Ezequiel Menendez, Director of Music at St. Joseph Cathedral and head of the Office of Sacred Music for the Archdiocese, has formed a music advisory committee. This committee has scheduled informational seminars and musical gatherings that will address not only the changes, but will introduce new and revised music settings and, in general, support parish musicians and clergy. To keep you advised of the work of the committee and to allow us to easily contact you, we ask that you please forward your email address to the committee at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Archbishop Mansell on the New Roman Missal
On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Roman Catholics in the United States will celebrate Mass using the Third Edition of the Roman Missal. A special committee is working here in the Archdiocese of Hartford to ensure that you are prepared adequately to participate in the Liturgy with confidence at that time.
In the coming months, you will be notified of many opportunities to learn more about the new missal through a variety of resources, which will include printed material, live presentations, DVD video conferences and news about internet websites that provide instruction and information. The Archdiocesan website has a special link with information on the Roman Missal.
At the beginning of 2011, the Archdiocese of Hartford will offer a more in-depth instruction on this significant milestone in the history of the liturgy. Throughout the United States, bishops and priests are preparing to celebrate Mass with some new language. Your participation in the liturgy will involve some new words in the responses to the priest and in familiar prayers such as the Gloria and the Creed. This new translation will enable Roman Catholics who speak English to participate at Mass with the same prayers found in the Missals of other languages.
Every moment you invest in prayerful preparation promises to yield a spiritual harvest that cannot be measured. I invite you to seize this extraordinary opportunity to grow in understanding of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and of the faith that is ours through this new Roman Missal given to the entire world.
May our celebration of the Mass grow ever richer in the years to come.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Henry J. Mansell
Archbishop of Hartford
Chapter Discount
Dear NPM Hartford Chapter Members,
Please help us to get the word out about the 2011 NPM National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, which will be held from July 18 to 22. Information about the convention is now available online at www.npm.org.
Chapter Discount
It only takes ten members from the same chapter to qualify for a chapter group discount of fifteen percent, which is even lower than the Early Bird rate! For every ten additional registrants from the same chapter, the discount increases by five percent. This can be a real savings for budget conscious musicians!
Musicians from the same chapter can sometimes save money by sharing hotel rooms and planning for meals together. Many chapters gather their members one evening of the convention for a special dinner.
Begin now to get the word out about the chapter convention discount. You may read complete details at http://www.npm.org/EducationEvents/convention/national/images/ChapterDiscount.pdf. Please note that the deadline for chapter discount registrations is June 4. That may seem a long way off, but it’s never too early to get the word out before people begin making summer plans.
Convention and Institutes Brochures
Within the next couple of weeks we will make available to you a form to order convention and/or institutes brochures. We will also be happy to send you sample newsletter and e-mail announcements. If you have questions or special requests, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail.
Thanks!!NPM Hartford Board

September 20, 2010
Dear MPM Hartford Chapter Members, Present and Past,
The new chapter year, September, 2010 through August, 2011, will have a different format than in previous years. It will be a year of rebuilding, change and more importantly, growth. In May, 2010 a survey was sent and it was to be completed and returned by May 15th. The board discussed the results and there was a meeting held on June 1st, open to anyone who received the survey. Here are the important points that were discussed at the meeting.
Membership dues: Included with this letter is a registration form for membership for the 2010-11 chapter year. The annual dues for an individual membership have increased from $11 per year to $15 per year. However, the board is proposing another choice- a parish membership. Ask your music director/pastor to sponsor all musicians, choir members, liturgy personnel for an annual amount of $100 payable to NPM Hartford Chapter. How will this be beneficial to you and your parish? For programs that NPM Hartford Chapter sponsors, ANY music or liturgical minister from that parish who is interested in attending, will be able to do so at a reduced cost to them.
Commissioning of Choir Members: On Sunday, October 10, 2010 at 4 PM at St. Joseph Cathedral in Hartford, Bishop Macaluso, who is an organist/musician and a very inspirational speaker, will officiate at a commissioning ceremony for choirs, (children, teen and adult), and contemporary groups and directors. This program is being sponsored by the Archdiocese of Hartford along with NPM Hartford Chapter. Please pass this along to your choir directors/pastors for inclusion in your weekly parish bulletins.
NPM National Convention: Jean Degan said that she would be attending the convention in Detroit. Upon her return, she met with the Board and gave us an overview of what was presented. Jean reported on the breakout sessions on the new mass format that will begin in 2012. You can access the final text of the Order of Mass on the USCCB website.
